Since 1938 The Salvation Army has celebrated National Donut Day on the first Friday in June. The very first celebration of National Donut Day raised funds for people in need during the Great Depression. Today, the day serves as a reminder of how compassion, faith and a willingness to put others above one's self can restore hope - even in the darkest times.
We are hosting an event on June 7 on Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis with our partner Jack's Donuts to celebrate this sweet treat. We plan to hand out fresh donuts from 10am-1pm to individuals who are walking around the circle.
We are looking for volunteers (those under 18 years of age must have an adult present at all times) to come out from 9am-2pm to help us with the following positions: assist with set up, hand out donuts, dress as our Shieldy mascot, dress in our Donut outfits, walk around with post cards to area businesses inviting them to come out for a donut, ring the red kettle bell, and assist with clean up.
We are trying to secure free parking for our volunteers at the zoo, and use our transit van to shuttle volunteers over to Monument Circle (we will let volunteers who sign up know if this works out).
