Volunteer: NAMI Ending the Silence Presenter

The NAMI Ending the Silence Volunteer Experience:

NAMI Indiana is currently looking for volunteers for our NAMI Ending the Silence presentation. Ending the Silence (ETS) is a prevention and early intervention program that engages youth, school staff and families in a discussion about mental health. Audience members learn to recognize the early warning signs of mental health conditions and learn what to do if they or someone they know is showing these signs. The chance to hear directly from a young adult with a mental health condition dispels myths, instills a message of hope and recovery and encourages individuals to reduce stigma. Volunteers can get trained to be a lead or young adult presenter. The lead presenter shares an informative presentation via PowerPoint(25 mins), while the young adult presenter shares their journey of recovery (10 mins).

Training:

NAMI Ending the Silence volunteers will go through a self-paced online training. Once the training is completed, volunteers must complete a mock presentation with the NAMI Indiana staff before being cleared to give their first presentation.

Minimum Time Commitment Requirements:

We ask all volunteers to commit to at least 1 presentation per month when applicable.

Program leader qualifications:

Prospective leaders must meet one of the following descriptions: (1) young adult age 18-35 in recovery with a mental health condition; (2) adult who is either a family member or a person with a mental health condition.

Volunteer: St. Vincent De Paul - Indianapolis Volunteer

We welcome young and old alike, and it’s a great way for students to fulfill service hour requirements. Everyone has something to offer, and you are invited to join us with whatever time and God-given talents you wish to donate. We know that you will find it to be one of the most rewarding things you can do.

Volunteers are needed for the following opportunities:

Food Pantry 3001 E. 30th Street:  We need lots of help at the Food Pantry repackaging produce and meat, sorting canned goods, manning the meat, produce, dairy and free stations, and loading groceries in cars on shopping days. We serve approximately 4,000 households each week in addition to delivering to 380 homebound neighbors each Wednesday.

Distribution Center 1201 E. Maryland Street:  This is the hub that receives all the material donations from our community. We need volunteers to receive and sort/organize clothing, shoes, linens, and household donations. Also need volunteers to assist at the dock.

Volunteer: Fishers Adopt-A-Road Volunteer

The City of Fishers is one of the fastest growing municipalities in Indiana. Such a sudden explosion of growth may have hit other communities by storm, but we have been fortunate in Fishers to have the community leadership and vision to develop a charted course for our future.

At the heart of this vision is our commitment to protect our environment and preserve the neighborhood spirit and civic pride that remains the foundation of our community. To further ensure the quality of life we enjoy, the City of Fishers has enacted the Adopt-A-Road program to improve the environment and beautify our roadsides.

Established in 1992, the Adopt-A-Road program is an opportunity for individuals, community groups, and organizations to volunteer and take pride in the appearance of our community. At the same time, this allows the City to concentrate more of its resources on road maintenance and construction.

By giving our office 48-hour advanced notice, we will be able to provide you with all the necessary equipment needed to perform your pick-ups. The city will supply safety vests, gloves, and plastic trash bags. Upon your notification, we will remove the bags from the roadside, and any large or dangerous items that you/your organization flag.

If you/your organization are interested in participating in the Adopt-A-Road program, please CLICK HERE to fill out the Fishers Adopt-A-Road Agreement Application.

Thank you for your interest in the City of Fishers Adopt-A-Road program and your willingness to help maintain the cleanliness and beauty of the community in which we live and work. Please feel free to contact Amy Crell at (317)670-9437 if you have any questions.

Volunteer: Adopt-A-Storm Drain

The City of Fishers has enacted the Adopt-A-Storm Drain program to improve the water quality of our streams while reducing flood risk in our community. Storm drains (also known as catch basins) are crucial parts of the city’s infrastructure that collect rainfall and snowmelt that cannot be absorbed through asphalt or pavement. Keeping these drains clear and free of debris prevents pollutants from entering local waterways and helps reduce localized flooding by ensuring water can flow freely down the drain.

Adopt-a-Storm Drain is a Fishers volunteer program that provides the public with an opportunity to be actively involved in clearing storm drains.  The endeavor strives to improve the water quality of our streams while reducing flood risk in our community. Storm drains are important infrastructure that redirect rainfall to our waterways. They can often get clogged with debris or used for dumping pollutants. Protect storm drains near you by making sure only rain goes down the drain! The City of Fishers is asking residents and other community members to sign up and Adopt-A-Storm Drain to help keep Fishers safe.

The Role of an Adopt-A-Storm Drain Participant

The only prerequisite for Adopt-a-Drain is to have a genuine concern for the well-being of our community.

Duties include:

Inspecting storm drains at least once per month and before forecasted heavy rains. Remove leaves, trash, and other debris when needed Track hours

Volunteer: I Support The Girls Volunteer

Volunteers are the backbone of our organization. Besides those who volunteer to conduct drives and collections, volunteers are involved in many of the behind-the-scenes aspects of I Support the Girls. Some of our volunteers are involved in research projects and some are conducting studies. We have volunteers who spend a few minutes on the phone each day, helping us gather information which we use in our fundraising, marketing and advocacy efforts.  And yes, we have hundreds of volunteers yearly who take time to sort through thousands of products covering the living room floor of our affiliate heads homes! Without their help, we would be unable to deliver millions of products each year to those in need. Please email Rachael Heger to learn more and to get involved.

Agency: Riverview Health

Riverview Health relies on the assistance of hundreds of volunteers each year, and new volunteers are always welcome. Volunteering is great way to foster community involvement while helping others. The volunteer program at Riverview Health has been in existence for nearly 60 years, and volunteers have always made a tremendous impact, giving of their time and talents.

Some of the many volunteer service areas include patient transport, guest services, Carolyn's Corner gift shop, Women's Boutique and openings at Riverview Health Westfield Hospital. Volunteers work in four-hour shifts in the morning or afternoon, at least one day per week. A one-day orientation and annual mandatory education session provides training and review on general hospital procedures.

Volunteer achievements are recognized during National Healthcare Volunteer Week and an annual holiday breakfast. Other benefits include complimentary meals during volunteer shifts and discounts in the Carolyn's Corner gift shop, Riverview Health Women’s Boutique and Riverview Health Rehab & Fitness centers.

If you’re interested in volunteering at Riverview Health, please fill out our online application form or contact the manager of Volunteer Services at 317.776.7236. An in-person interview, background check and health screening are required prior to being a volunteer.

Volunteer: Fair Housing Mystery Shopper

The Fair Housing Center of Central Indiana (FHCCI) needs a diverse group of dependable, conscientious people 18 years and older to assist in gathering information about housing practices. These persons are commonly referred to as "fair housing testers" or "mystery shoppers." Testers are provided training and a stipend for their time and related expenses. Stipends vary depending on the task assigned. These positions are classified as part-time positions although hours are based upon your availability and tests needed.

Testers are of various racial and ethnic groups, men and women, over a broad range of ages with and without disabilities. Testers serve an important role in identifying when housing discrimination may or may not be occurring. The testing process has been consistently supported by federal courts as a legitimate and necessary method to identify practices of unlawful housing discrimination.

To participate in our testing program, YOU MUST:

Be detail oriented Be a good listener and observer Have a telephone and access to a computer Have a desire to work on behalf of civil rights protections Have a desire to work and interact with, as well as demonstrate respect for individuals and groups without regard to race, religion, gender, color, national origin, familial status, disability, ancestry, sexual orientation, age and/or military service veteran status

You should also have your own means of reliable transportation, although, in limited situations transportation may not be necessary. Due to the potential to be a witness to a fair housing violation and federal grant requirements, testers are screened for criminal history and any possible conflicts of interest. Please note that testers are considered part-time employees. If you have any questions or are interested in applying, contact the FHCCI for more information at ( info@fhcci.org) with "Fair Housing Tester" in the email header. You’ll be contacted shortly after receipt about next steps. CLICK HERE to learn more.
