Volunteer: I Support The Girls Volunteer

Volunteers are the backbone of our organization. Besides those who volunteer to conduct drives and collections, volunteers are involved in many of the behind-the-scenes aspects of I Support the Girls. Some of our volunteers are involved in research projects and some are conducting studies. We have volunteers who spend a few minutes on the phone each day, helping us gather information which we use in our fundraising, marketing and advocacy efforts.  And yes, we have hundreds of volunteers yearly who take time to sort through thousands of products covering the living room floor of our affiliate heads homes! Without their help, we would be unable to deliver millions of products each year to those in need. Please email Rachael Heger to learn more and to get involved.

Without their help, we would be unable to deliver millions of products each year to those in need. Please email Rachael Heger to learn more and to get involved.

Volunteer: NAMI Indiana Volunteer

Becoming a NAMI volunteer is rewarding and has a real impact on those you serve. You use your experience of living with a mental illness or your experience as a loved one or caregiver of someone living with a mental illness to provide support, education, or awareness to your neighbors.

Volunteers are trained to lead a program and are asked to make a commitment to provide that program in the community.  You can volunteer with your local affiliate, or start programming in a community that does not have an affiliate. Training is provided free through the NAMI Indiana state office.

Below are the current programs provided through NAMI and NAMI Indiana. If you are interested in getting started or if you'd like more information, please email info@namiindiana.org.

NAMI Family Support Group Facilitator:

NAMI Family support group facilitators lead our family support groups for families and friends of people who are living with a mental illness. Support groups are held all around the state and are offered free to adults. Facilitators are trained by NAMI Indiana staff to help families problem solve and provide an empathetic ear.

Connections Recovery Support Group Facilitator:

Connections support group facilitators lead our support groups for people living with mental illnesses. Connections support groups are held all over the state. Connections facilitators are peers living in recovery. NAMI Indiana holds trainings throughout the year for people interested in  becoming a support group facilitator.

Family-to-Family Leaders:

Family-to-Family leaders lead the 8 week education class for families or caregivers of someone living with a mental illness. Leaders are trained by NAMI Indiana staff. Two trained leaders will lead classes in their local community.

Peer-to-Peer Leaders:

Peer-to-Peer leaders lead the 8 week education class that helps people who are in or looking to live in recovery with their mental illness. As a leader you and another leader will lead the class in learning ways to cope and maintain recovery. Peer-to-Peer leaders are trained through NAMI Indiana.

Ending the Silence Presenters:

Ending the Silence presenters are trained young adult speakers who share their recovery story with middle and high school students around the state.  NAMI Indiana staff train and  work with the speakers to help craft their story.

In Our Own Voice Presenter:

In Our Own Voice volunteers get the opportunity to share their story of living in recovery. IOOV presenters talk to various groups to help end the stigma associated with mental illnesses. People who hear an IOOV presentation are able to leave with the knowledge that mental illnesses are treatable.

Family & Friends Presenter:

Presenters for Family & Friends lead this seminar designed to inform families and friends of people living with mental illness about the ways they can support their loved one. Presenters are trained by NAMI and lead this program in their local community.

Sharing Your Story with Law Enforcement Presenter:

Sharing Your Story with Law Enforcement (SYSLE) is a presentation program that prepares individuals and family members to share their stories of lived experience with mental illness to a law enforcement audience, such as during Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training, or other events where mental illness and related topics are featured. This presentation is provided monthly to new staff at prison facilities in Indiana.

NAMI in the Lobby Volunteer:

NAMI in the Lobby is a service for parents and other family caregivers in need of mental health resources for their loved ones. Trained volunteers have a designated space in the lobby area of hospitals during visitation hours where they provide visitors with information on NAMI and other local mental health resources. This NAMI Indiana program offers parents and caregivers the opportunity to feel connected with resources and information that can help. Volunteers receive training through the hospitals and NAMI Indiana.

Public Policy Committee:

Our public policy committee keeps the legislative process in their sight. NAMI Indiana PPC follows what laws are being changed and looks to change laws. Members of this committee will testify at hearings and meet with legislators to provide an understanding of living with mental illness. This group meets once a month.

NAMI Indiana HelpLine Volunteer:

The NAMI Indiana HelpLine is contacted over 1,000 times a year by people across the state who are affected by mental illness and in need of help. HelpLine Specialists provide a vital service to the NAMI Indiana community by responding with empathy to inquiries by phone, email, and social media posts, and by providing valuable information about mental health conditions and treatment options, NAMI education and support programs, and other mental health resources.

NAMI Indiana HelpLine Specialists help individuals and families improve their lives and advance recovery by listening to their concerns and connecting them with essential resources and services. They extend empathy, understanding, respect, and emotional support to everyone contacting the NAMI Indiana HelpLine. As volunteers, they will develop a deep understanding of the mental health landscape, mental illnesses, treatment options, and recovery strategies. They will also experience the appreciation and gratitude expressed by the individuals, families, and caregivers they serve. HelpLine Specialists are asked to volunteer four hours a week for six months. Read the entire HelpLine Volunteer description and requirements here. HelpLine Specialists must go through an application process, click here for an application and contact Elizabeth Boyle at eboyle@namiindiana.org  for more information and to apply.

For information on any of these groups or programs contact 800-677-6442.

Even if you are not ready to volunteer, you can always make your voice heard. By simply talking openly about mental illnesses you are helping to end stigma and spread awareness. You can always do something!

Volunteer: Fair Housing Mystery Shopper

The Fair Housing Center of Central Indiana (FHCCI) needs a diverse group of dependable, conscientious people 18 years and older to assist in gathering information about housing practices. These persons are commonly referred to as "fair housing testers" or "mystery shoppers." Testers are provided training and a stipend for their time and related expenses. Stipends vary depending on the task assigned. These positions are classified as part-time positions although hours are based upon your availability and tests needed.

Testers are of various racial and ethnic groups, men and women, over a broad range of ages with and without disabilities. Testers serve an important role in identifying when housing discrimination may or may not be occurring. The testing process has been consistently supported by federal courts as a legitimate and necessary method to identify practices of unlawful housing discrimination.

To participate in our testing program, YOU MUST:

Be detail oriented Be a good listener and observer Have a telephone and access to a computer Have a desire to work on behalf of civil rights protections Have a desire to work and interact with, as well as demonstrate respect for individuals and groups without regard to race, religion, gender, color, national origin, familial status, disability, ancestry, sexual orientation, age and/or military service veteran status

You should also have your own means of reliable transportation, although, in limited situations transportation may not be necessary. Due to the potential to be a witness to a fair housing violation and federal grant requirements, testers are screened for criminal history and any possible conflicts of interest. Please note that testers are considered part-time employees. If you have any questions or are interested in applying, contact the FHCCI for more information at ( info@fhcci.org) with "Fair Housing Tester" in the email header. You’ll be contacted shortly after receipt about next steps. CLICK HERE to learn more.

Volunteer: Safe Families Family Coach Volunteer

You can play a vital role in Safe Families for Children (Safe Families) by volunteering as a Family Coach to help parents in crisis get back on their feet.

As a Family Coach, you will:

Support the Host Family. This ensures that families get the support and resources they need to provide a safe and nurturing environment for children. Monitor children’s safety. Because safety is a top priority, the Family Coach begins assessing safety within 48 hours of a child moving in with the Host Family—and each week for at least a month. Provide a family in need with resources, such as community referrals and assistance in making their appointments. Facilitate the relationship between the Host Family and the Family in need with compassion and empathy.

You will also:

Listen to Host Families and Families in need. The Family Coach provides space for them to express their thoughts and concerns. Manage expectations. For example, the Host Family may feel that they must fix problems or situations that are not their responsibility. Alternately, if a hosting arrangement seems longer than expected, the Family Coach is needed to temper expectations. Show empathy, hope, grace, and compassion. We work hard to err on the side of grace. Problem solve. Family Coaches work with the church and other community resources to assist Families in need. Reassure. Stressful situations require a calm presence and the ability to give hope to those who may feel hopeless.

Volunteer to become a Family Coach and be sure to let us know if you have experience in child welfare or as a host family. Please CLICK HERE to learn more and to apply.

We have a therapeutic art studio at Noble East and another at Noble Business Enterprises on Indianapolis’ west side.  Share your creativity by leading a collaborative art project.

Corporate Volunteer Days
Many businesses want to give back to the community while providing opportunities for their employees to bond, so we’ll help you design a Volunteer Day around your team’s schedule and interests.

Lead an Activity
Plan and host an activity with the individuals we serve. Crafts, music, art, a cooking class, gardening, sports, a building project are just a few ideas so let us know what you’d like to do.

Share Your Talent
Do you have a unique talent? Let us know how you want to share it with the people we serve.

Volunteer: Central Indiana Land Trust Volunteer

VOLUNTEER Got time and interest? You can help protect land!

Your time is one of the greatest gifts you can give to the Central Indiana Land Trust. Whatever your skill level or interest, there are many ways to contribute to our mission.

Volunteer Field Days

Many volunteers help care for our special natural areas, working side-by-side with our stewardship professionals. You can help with periodic maintenance and restoration work essential to the proper conservation of our properties. Central Indiana Land Trust volunteers of all ages gather on “field days” in the spring and fall to help with activities such as planting trees, installing trail markers, removing invasive plants and picking up litter. In addition to getting work done on these days, we often take a guided walk after our work is done. Visit our Upcoming Events page for a list of volunteer days planned.

Corporate or Group Volunteering

The Central Indiana Land Trust works closely with the local businesses and community groups to offer large group volunteer opportunities. Groups may arrange their own volunteer event or join an existing event. If you are interested in learning how your group can organize an activity, contact Traci Willis at 317-631-5263 or twillis@conservingindiana.org.

Site Stewards

Each of our properties benefits from one or more Site Stewards who monitor it on a quarterly basis and report to our professional stewardship staff on any changes or activities observed at the site. These reports help us shape our field days and plan for stewardship activities. Site stewards also act as the eyes and ears of our properties. These volunteers are imperative to the work of maintaining and protecting our natural areas. If you’re interested in learning more about being a Site Steward, please contact Jamison Hutchins at 406-546-7244 or jhutchins@conservingindiana.org.

Special Skills Volunteers

Do you have a special talent, skill or area of  expertise that you could use to help the Central Indiana Land Trust? Please contact Traci Willis at 317-631-5263 or twillis@conservingindiana.org if you are interested in donating your time in the following special skill areas:

Our vision is to be known throughout Hamilton County as a trusted resource for connecting seniors with beneficial programs to support their independence. Adults with limited decisional capacity in one or more areas of their life as determined by the court benefit from the Hamilton County VASIA Guardianship Program and Shepherd’s Center of Hamilton County. Guardianship is a dramatic intervention; it is a legal appointment by the court after careful consideration and evaluation to determine that less restrictive options for assistance would not be enough.

Advocates work closely with SCHC care team and Hamilton County Court to monitor client’s well-being. The advocate helps them make decisions based on their own best interests and preferences.

Volunteer Advocates will complete an interview, background check and have extensive training as well as continued support and ongoing training.

Volunteer: Become a Big!

There are well over 1,000 kids waiting to be matched with a mentor through our program at this very moment. Our agency serves Marion, Hamilton, and Johnson counties, and we match within 20 minutes of where you live or work. That means the kids waiting are your neighbors, family, and fellow community members.

We ask our mentors to make a 1-year commitment up front. You must have accessible to reliable transportation, be over 19 years of age, and go through a background check. Once matched, you will see your little for 4 hours per month.

If you’re ready to become a Big, that is wonderful! Here is the link to begin the process: https://bebigforkids.com/volunteer If you’re interested but want more information, that’s awesome too!
