Each day, Wheeler Mission is blessed with a large amount of donations. The best of our donations go directly to needs at our shelters.  Others new and gently used items are sold to the community, the Store helps fund life-changing programs. Volunteers sort and organize donations alongside staff members and other volunteers.

The time slots are available on our website, or you can reach out to me Felicia Mcduffy at FeliciaMcDuffy@Wheelermission.org and you can get signed up to help sort donations in our warehouse or our clothing area.

Qualifications:

For this shift, you will sort and organize donations to be sent to our shelters or sold in our thrift store where the proceeds go back to serve and care for our guests!

Winter Contingency Monitors play a crucial frontline role at Wheeler Mission—Bloomington in ensuring that our neighbors experiencing homelessness have a safe, warm, and welcoming environment during the coldest months of the year. Volunteers assist staff with guest check-in, provide hospitality, support basic shelter operations, and help maintain a calm and respectful environment within our Emergency Shelter Services building.

This is one of the most impactful volunteer opportunities during the winter season — helping save lives when temperatures drop.

The Fishers Health Department is seeking dedicated volunteers to assist with translating vaccination records written in languages other than English—specifically Kurdish and Arabic. This vital work helps our clinical team determine which immunizations are still needed for patients and ensures accurate public health documentation.

Join the Fight for Native Habitats: Ritchey Woods Weed Wrangle!

The City of Fishers is teaming up with the Hamilton County Invasive Partnership (HIP) to host an invasive species pull, and we need your hands to help protect one of our local gems: Ritchey Woods Nature Preserve.

Invasive plants may look green, but they crowd out the native wildflowers and trees that our local birds and pollinators rely on. We are looking for 30 dedicated volunteers to help us clear the way for a healthier ecosystem.

Volunteers will work alongside experts from HIP to identify and remove invasive vegetation. This is a "hands-on" event where we will be pulling, lopping, and bagging plants to prevent them from spreading further into the preserve.

Our Food Donation Pick-Up volunteers play a key role in this effort by helping us collect donations from local grocery stores, restaurants, and community partners, ensuring that good food never goes to waste and is redirected to feed those who need it most.

This volunteer role is perfect for individuals who enjoy being out in the community, meeting partners, and knowing their time directly translates into thousands of meals each year. By using their own vehicle and assisting staff with scheduled routes, Food Donation Pick-Up volunteers provide the essential link between donors and our kitchen staff, making it possible to prepare fresh, wholesome meals every single day. After each scheduled pick-up route, food donations will be taken to Wheeler Mission--Bloomington's temporary food storage space, One World KitchenShare, located at 2361 W. Rappel Ave., Bloomington, IN 47404 or Wheeler Mission--Bloomington's campus, which is located at 215 S. Westplex Ave., Bloomington, IN 47404.

From emergency shelter, restroom/shower facilities, a commercial kitchen and cafeteria, community day rooms, long-term, residential programming, and communal space, Wheeler Mission--Bloomington's team has a lot to maintain each and every day.  We're looking for volunteer groups to walk alongside us to deep clean facilities within our Westplex Avenue campus on Saturday mornings.

Considering Wheeler Mission--Bloomington serves three meals a day (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) and our team is temporarily preparing food at OneWorld's Kitchen Share, we are looking to fill an ongoing need for transporting food from our meal prep site to our Westplex Avenue campus before and after lunch and dinner.

If you drive a reliable vehicle and can spare a half hour, Wheeler Mission--Bloomington's Food Runner volunteer opportunity is a nice way to break up your day and to serve your community; specifically, those who are experiencing homelessness and hunger.

You'll pick up food at OneWorld's Kitchen Share, located at 2361 W. Rappel Ave., Bloomington, IN 47404, and then transport it to Wheeler Mission--Bloomington's Westplex Avenue campus, located at 201 S. Westplex Ave., Bloomington, IN 47404.  This particular description applies to our 11-11:30 am shift.

Once lunch or dinner concludes, we do need volunteers to fill a Food Runner shift transporting any leftovers/used utensils from Wheeler Mission--Bloomington's Westplex Avenue campus (215 S. Westplex Ave., Bloomington, IN 47404) back to OneWorld's Kitchen Share (2361 W. Rappel Ave., Bloomington, IN 47404) between 1-1:30 pm.

Join us in serving our neighbors at the Ignite Community Dinner! This volunteer Opportunity is every Thursday evening from 4:30 to 6:30 PM. Volunteers should plan to arrive around 4:30 to begin cooking/ setting up!

Volunteers help prepare, cook, serve, and clean up a free meal of spaghetti, salad, bread, and dessert for anyone in our community. This dinner is about more than food, it’s about creating a space for fellowship, connection, and belonging. Our volunteers offer patience, kindness and companionship to patients and their families in hopes of peace and understanding. Volunteers donate their time and efforts in a wide variety of ways, such as reading to, talking with, writing a letter for the patient or give a family member a little time off from the role of primary caregiver.

Volunteers may also be asked to provide office support to our business team. Tasks may include handling phone calls, making copies, attending memorial services and helping with a variety of special events or projects. Many of our volunteers have benefited from hospice care personally during a loved one’s serious illness, and they want to help families facing the same difficult time. Others are simply compassionate individuals who want to give themselves in a very special way. Our hospice volunteers often work directly with patients and families, providing compassion, companionship, and emotional support. The NAMI Ending the Silence Volunteer Experience:

NAMI Indiana is currently looking for volunteers for our NAMI Ending the Silence presentation. Ending the Silence (ETS) is a prevention and early intervention program that engages youth, school staff and families in a discussion about mental health. Audience members learn to recognize the early warning signs of mental health conditions and learn what to do if they or someone they know is showing these signs. The chance to hear directly from a young adult with a mental health condition dispels myths, instills a message of hope and recovery and encourages individuals to reduce stigma. Volunteers can get trained to be a lead or young adult presenter. The lead presenter shares an informative presentation via PowerPoint(25 mins), while the young adult presenter shares their journey of recovery (10 mins).

Training:

NAMI Ending the Silence volunteers will go through a self-paced online training. Once the training is completed, volunteers must complete a mock presentation with the NAMI Indiana staff before being cleared to give their first presentation.

Minimum Time Commitment Requirements:

We ask all volunteers to commit to at least 1 presentation per month when applicable.

Program leader qualifications:

Prospective leaders must meet one of the following descriptions: (1) young adult age 18-35 in recovery with a mental health condition; (2) adult who is either a family member or a person with a mental health condition.

We’re excited to welcome new volunteers to support NAMI in the Lobby at Riley Hospital for Children! By sharing mental health resources, personal lived experiences, and offering a compassionate listening ear, our volunteers make a powerful impact. But we can’t do it alone-we need your help!

If you or someone you know is a loved one of an individual with mental illness, this is a great opportunity to give back & help other families.

Through comprehensive training and the power of lived experience, our volunteers provide active listening, empathy, and support as families and individuals navigate their mental health journeys. Volunteers are asked to complete an application, a NAMI Indiana screening call, complete 8 hours of hybrid training, and fulfill a background check.

Running for Real Estate is seeking course marshal volunteers for the Strides for Shelter 5K on Saturday, June 13 at Witten Park, 13256 Saxony Blvd. Volunteers are needed from 7:30 - 9:15 a.m. Join the fun and help cheer on runners and point them in the right direction. 

If you have a calling to love, care and help others, becoming a CorsoCare hospice volunteer might be the perfect opportunity for you. Most volunteers feel personally rewarded through their offering of time, energy and compassion when they see how much they are able to help patients and families.

We depend on our volunteers to help us provide the love, respect and care our patients and their families need. Whether reading to a patient, preparing a meal or cleaning up around the house, it is about creating the absolute best experience in every interaction for our patients.

There are a variety of ways you can volunteer with us, including direct patient interaction, indirect patient interaction and administrative support. CorsoCare Hospice will provide training and quarterly in-services for all volunteers.

Stocking Day Volunteer 

Join us to help keep our pantry stocked and ready for families in need. Volunteer roles include but are not limited to the following:

Shelf Stocking Team Volunteers receive, inspect, and organize new inventory, separating products in the designated area of the pantry. They check for product damage, cover barcodes, complete inventory forms, and place new items on the shelves.

Pantry Bag Packing Team Volunteers assemble and pack 100 pantry bags, each containing essential items such as toothbrushes, soap, deodorant, laundry soap, toilet paper, shampoo, and other hygiene products. Packed bags are then organized on shelves for easy access.

Clean-Up and Safety Team Volunteers ensure that the pantry area is clean and safe by organizing shelves, breaking down cardboard, and taking out recycling and trash. They also ensure all doors and walkways are clear and secure the pantry before leaving.

Pantry Day Volunteer

Forms Team Volunteers greet families, distribute forms and QR codes, and assist with traffic flow to keep lines organized and moving smoothly.

Families Team Volunteers review and verify family information, confirm ID and address, and determine the items each family needs before passing this information to the Runners.

Runners Team Volunteers gather and load pantry bags and additional hygiene items into vehicles based on each family’s specific needs.

Stocking Team Volunteers prepare extra pantry bags, restock supplies, and ensure stations are fully stocked to keep the distribution process running smoothly.

CoCoRaHS, the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network, is a nationwide volunteer observing program funded by many organizations, including the National Weather Service. Observers in this program measure rain, snow and hail, and report it on the CoCoRaHS website. The data is then distributed to the public directly and to many different partners, including the National Weather Service. The Fishers Rain Garden Steward is a program that allows the community to get involved in protecting Fishers waterways. Respond to this opportunity and you will be contacted with more information regarding care needed for the 96th Street & Sargent Road! Care could include, but is not limited to, over seeding, trash removal, invasive pulling, marking, etc.

Prior rain garden experience or knowledge is not required! Fishers staff will provide direction and materials.

We offer service projects for kids ages 2-12 and their caring adults. There are several different projects offered per month, some are Anywhere Projects (remote) and some are In Person events held at the sites of our Non-Profit Partners. Families, faith-based organizations, scouts, classrooms and other groups of kids can participate in our Anywhere Projects (remote).  Each project or event will take 60-90 minutes and a variety of topics are offered each month. At the conclusion of an Anywhere Project, you'll drop off your completed donations to one of our collection points around the Indy area and we will take them to a local nonprofit who needs them.  At our In Person events families register to attend together to participate in an educational activity, engage in a hands-on service project, and are provided with meaningful reflection. The American Cancer Society Road To Recovery program is a curbside-to-curbside transportation service that provides free rides to cancer patients to and from treatments.

To foster connections and support among various Fishers organizations, businesses, and residents in our community, the City of Fishers hosts a monthly Mayor's Breakfast event. This gathering takes place in the theater at Fishers Municipal Center, 1 Municipal Drive. 

We are seeking enthusiastic volunteers to assist with setup, attendee check-in, and tear-down. Volunteers should be comfortable using a computer and able to work efficiently. Breakfast will be provided.

Project Play relies heavily on volunteer support, especially during the holiday season, when they receive nearly half of their referrals. Volunteer opportunities are available for individuals, families, or groups (such as Scouts or sports teams) and include donation delivery, sorting and organizing items in the warehouse, packing donation bags, and even take-home projects, such as categorizing books or changing out batteries in toys. Would you like an ongoing volunteer opportunity that will foster relationships and connect with Fishers youth? We are seeking dedicated volunteers who are available to assist with student local government study trips at the new Fishers Municipal Complex.  Due to the nature of this opportunity, we are asking volunteers to commit to at least 10 of the 20 sessions.

Volunteers will assist with navigating students to their proper location, keep our presenters on time, guide students through activities, distribute supplies, and help answer general questions. Training will be provided.

Join the Geist Half Marathon Volunteer team and assist with monitoring the VIP and Volunteer parking lots. VIP participants and Volunteers will have a designated parking lots. Purchase, assemble, and deliver 120 Sack Meals for our guests at Wheeler Mission - Bloomington! Join your family, friends, neighbors, or colleagues in preparing sack meals. Sack meals should be prepared by individuals or groups in a commercial kitchen exercising proper food handling precautions. 

We are looking for groups willing to do one of these two options:

Welcome to the City of Fishers Geist Reservoir Cleanup Steward Program.  Trash, debris, and pollutants in the reservoir do not stay in one spot forever: it all moves on to other rivers, lakes, and streams. Even the harmful chemicals found in trash, debris, and pollutants present dangers to all forms of aquatic life. Cleaning up our waterways prevents pollution like plastic waste from reaching our oceans. 80% of plastic waste is carried to oceans via small rivers and streams that flow through densely populated urban areas. Plastic in our waterways can get entangled with wildlife, or can sometimes look like food to them. Do your part by becoming a Geist Reservoir Cleanup Steward and help minimize downstream pollution.

This is an on-demand cleanup program to remove trash from Geist Reservoir.  The trash drop-off location for this program is at the Northeast corner of Geist Waterfront Park at the end of an old ramp and is designated on the selection map in the link below.  The City will monitor the trash drop location and remove trash from the site on a regular basis, but we will not be present at the time of your arrival.  You are allowed to drop off any kind of trash that you find that you can fit within your boat.  Typical types of trash include buoys, dock floats, polystyrene, paper, metals, plastics, chairs, floatable trash, signs, logs, etc.  There are two options per below: 

1.  Boat Owners:  If you have your own canoe, kayak, pontoon, speed boat, or fishing boat and want to participate in the program, select your steward location/cove from our selection map in the link below, launch your boat from your preferred location at one of the marinas or from your personal dock, and drop off the trash at the marked trash drop location as indicated on the selection map.  The City will monitor the trash drop location and remove trash from the site on a regular basis.  The trash drop location will be marked with a sign and visible from the water and has a GPS coordinate of 85.9108378 degrees west and 39.9492044 degrees north. 

2. Non-boat Owners:  If you don’t own a boat and still want to participate, simply select one of our land-based cleanup locations on the selection map in the link below and either walk or use your vehicle to get to some of our land-based locations at bridge crossings, etc.  All land-based accessible trash can be disposed of at any one of the nearby City park locations that have accessible trash dumpsters such as Brooks School Park, Geist Waterfront Park, or Olio Fields or you may choose to dispose of the trash at your home location if the quantity is small.

Central Indiana FCA is looking for volunteers in ministry with a desire to impact student athletes and coaches, their teams, schools and our community. Food Pantry 3001 E. 30th Street:  We need lots of help at the Food Pantry repackaging produce and meat, sorting canned goods, manning the meat, produce, dairy and free stations, and loading groceries in cars on shopping days. We serve approximately 4,000 households each week in addition to delivering to 380 homebound neighbors each Wednesday.

Distribution Center 1201 E. Maryland Street:  This is the hub that receives all the material donations from our community. We need volunteers to receive and sort/organize clothing, shoes, linens, and household donations. Also need volunteers to assist at the dock.

Please do not exceed two shifts per day per volunteer. 

A 33-acre urban farm and one of the city’s most unique assets, the Fishers AgriPark (11171 Florida Road) is one of the nation’s largest urban farms and pays homage to Fishers’ agricultural roots. Every year, May through October, residents are invited to the AgriPark for u-pick opportunities in the public fields and gardens, animal encounters, and special programming. We are looking for individuals and/or groups (businesses, schools, churches, etc.) who have an interest and passion providing classes and/or workshops at our Harbor Light Center on the west side and Johnson County Center on the south side.  We would appreciate hearing from you if you have a particular skill to see if we might be able to share it with our individuals and families.  We are also looking to provide classes (on a volunteer basis) to individuals and families in various areas including budgeting, employment, conflict management, and wellness. 

We are looking to start providing classes and/or workshops on a monthly basis, and will work with the individual or group to find a date and time that work for you based on your schedule.  Please contact us for more details and we will also connect you with our centers to learn more about them as well as discuss your areas of expertise.

Please consider joining us for some bingo and lunch fun with seniors who enjoy gathering for a meal followed by some friendly competition in a non gambling environment.  We meet at our Fountain Square corps on Wednesdays with lunch generally starting at 12pm and bingo following shortly after with conclusion around 1:30pm. 

We are looking for individuals and/or small groups who are interested providing and serving lunch one or two times as well as donating/bringing prizes and helping during bingo.  Please note if you are willing to provide lunch that the meal will need to be either prepared on site at our corps or catered from a business (we cannot accept food made at home and brought into our facility to serve seniors).  Please contact us for more details including scheduling a date for providing a meal and/or bringing prizes.

We are looking for individuals and/or small groups to help with food pantry distribution at three of our locations: Fountain Square corps near downtown, Eagle Creek corps on the west side, and Barton Center downtown.  We are also looking for help with preparing food boxes at our Eagle Creek corps.  Volunteer positions include packing food based on household need and/or size, checking in families who come for assistance, distributing food to families if they come inside or taking food to vehicles outside, etc. Please see the days and times below during the week when you can join us to help those who need some assistance:

***Eagle Creek - Thursday from 10am-12pm and Friday from 9am-12pm
***Barton Center - Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 3-5pm
***Fountain Square - Tuesday and Thursday from 10am-12pm

We have two opportunities where we are looking for one or two individuals with a flexible schedule during the day to transport seniors:

***Our Eagle Creek corps located on the west side is looking for an individual to drive their van to take seniors who live in the adjacent apartment complex to local stores and bring them back to the apartment complex on Thursday from 1-3pm. 
***Our Fountain Square corps located near downtown is looking for an individual to drive their van to pick up seniors from their homes and bring them to the corps for lunch and bingo and then take them back to their homes following lunch and bingo on Wednesday from 11:30am-2pm

Deliver roses and cards to older adults on Valentine’s Day! Beginning in 2014, Wish of a Lifetime has organized a national campaign that empowers volunteers to spread love on February 14th by delivering a rose and/or decorating cards to send to older adults across the nation. During the campaign, volunteers can participate in three ways:

Be our boots on the ground to support a wish being fulfilled in your community. Wish Granting volunteers enhance and participate in wish experiences. Examples include sending a wish recipient off at the airport or participating in a wish as a companion.

The NAMI Indiana HelpLine is contacted over 1,000 times a year by people across the state who are affected by mental illness and in need of help. HelpLine Specialists provide a vital service to the NAMI Indiana community by responding with empathy to inquiries by phone, email, and social media posts, and by providing valuable information about mental health conditions and treatment options, NAMI education and support programs, and other mental health resources. Our public policy committee keeps the legislative process in their sight. NAMI Indiana PPC follows what laws are being changed and looks to change laws. Members of this committee will testify at hearings and meet with legislators to provide an understanding of living with mental illness. This group meets once a month. Presenters for Family & Friends lead this seminar designed to inform families and friends of people living with mental illness about the ways they can support their loved one. Presenters are trained by NAMI and lead this program in their local community. CLICK HERE to learn more and to apply. 

In Our Own Voice volunteers get the opportunity to share their story of living in recovery. IOOV presenters talk to various groups to help end the stigma associated with mental illnesses. People who hear an IOOV presentation are able to leave with the knowledge that mental illnesses are treatable. CLICK HERE to learn more and to apply. 

Ending the Silence presenters are trained young adult speakers who share their recovery story with middle and high school students around the state.  NAMI Indiana staff train and  work with the speakers to help craft their story. CLICK HERE to learn more and to apply. 

Peer-to-Peer leaders lead the 8 week education class that helps people who are in or looking to live in recovery with their mental illness. As a leader you and another leader will lead the class in learning ways to cope and maintain recovery. Peer-to-Peer leaders are trained through NAMI Indiana. CLICK HERE to learn more and to apply.
